Dubai Design Week is the largest creative festival in the Middle East, reflecting Dubai’s position as the regional capital of design and is held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.

Over 6 days, it’s a program of several design disciplines including architecture, product design, interiors, multimedia and graphic design that will be offered to both industry non-industry public, to be discovered Dubai Design District. Here are some of our personal highlights.

“Abwab translates as ‘doors’ in Arabic and is an annually remodeled exhibition dedicated to commissioning work from across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia with a purpose to promote design talent and stimulate information exchange, uniquely experienced at Dubai Design Week.”

Established as a global meeting point for the international design community, Dubai has the responsibility to perform as a leader in supporting regional design. “By summoning key players to collaborate and present opportunities for cultural exchange, Abwab acts as a recurring point of intersection for talents from the region and audiences . 171 designers have participated to date.”

In thw Edition 5 of Abwab, designers are “challenged to recreate the local classrooms of their cultures.” Designers from 3 countries: India, the Eastern Provinces of Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon will “engage audiences with representations of this year’s theme ‘ways of learning’.”

The audience can interact with each pavilion and experience the making of memory as well as explore the way information is shared and taught in the respective cultures, by design.

“MADAR, an initiative supported by Dubai Design District (d3) and taking place within Downtown Editions, will highlight the current climate of regional design, mapping out creativity from Beirut, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Kuwait.

By approaching thematics related to craft preservation by innovative production techniques, material innovation by upcycling and recycling waste materials, and reducing manufacturing waste with digital fabrication technologies, attention will be drawn to the ways in which these approaches to design empower creatives by offering them options across the large design spectrum and allowing them to experiment, innovate and partake in designing for impact and positive change.”

“Dubai Design Week will host over 60 free-to-attend workshops in Dubai Design District (d3) for design professionals and public visitors alike. Workshops range from digital design and fabrication, to origami and ceramics. “

“A showcase of prototypes based on contemporary forms of miniaturisation, ‘DIRes19: Miniaturising Interactive Technologies’ is a group exhibition bringing faculty and students together with startups and In5 members.”

The key event of Dubai Design Week, Downtown Design is the Middle East’s leading fair for original design.

“Advocating for and presenting high-quality design to industry professionals and design lovers, year-on-year the fair delivers a dynamic showcase, exhibiting the latest collections by leading international and regional brands alongside specially commissioned experiential projects and a thought-provoking line-up of talks and workshops.”

Global Grad Show, held in partnership with Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD), provides first-hand access to the next generation of innovators creating solutions for a better world.
