A Chat With Newby Hands, Global Beauty Director for NET-A-PORTER

The New Year is here and with it comes the wish to take better care of ourselves, our skins, our make-up routines. And we figured, who better to discuss everything beauty with than NET-A-PORTER’s Global Beauty Director , Newby Hands?
From her favourite picks to her observations on the beauty trends in the Middle East, Hands tells us all. Spoiler: Brick Red lips never go out of style.

Hello Newby. Could you kindly tell us a bit about you and how you started at NAP?

I am currently the Global Beauty Director for NET-A-PORTER. Since joining the company in 2015, I have focused on driving the category since It’s launch in 2013. NET-A-PORTER’s beauty assortment has evolved into one of the most distinguished offerings of luxury beauty and skincare online.

I joined NET-A-PORTER from online beauty retailer, Feelunique, where I held the position of Content Director since 2013. Prior to joining Feelunique, I was the Beauty Director of Harper’s Bazaar UK.

What are some of the hottest brands right now and what is a personal favourite?

I love the Ultra Violette Daydream Screen Tinted Veil SPF 50 – a great sunscreen with excellent coverage that comes in a choice of 15 different shades. Excellent to use all year round as it can double up as makeup giving your skin the protection it needs and a beautiful finish.

I’m also really impressed by U Beauty, as I love the textures and the fact that it is not just following what other brands do but really thinks about giving us products that we want to use as consumers. The new Mantle Skin Conditioning Wash is another great product as it cleanses the skin but leaves it very comfortable, not feeling tight or dry. For makeup Rose Inc is a key brand to note for its gorgeous, easy to wear makeup and skincare.

What are some of the beauty trends that you’ve observed in the region?

‘Status Skin’ is a huge ongoing trend. With more women looking to their skincare rather than relying on foundation to achieve that glowy, dewy, healthy-looking skin, so the focus has shifted towards highly efficient products and devices to achieve the very best complexion, reducing the need for full coverage foundations and heavy powders.

Healthy skin is non-negotiable for the warmer seasons! ‘Happy Hit of Colour’ is another key trend that’s all about embracing colour in an effortless and minimal way. Think cheerful shots of colour blended over bare skin, ideally with fingers, not a brush, or an easy dab of colour on the eyes, cheeks or lips – anything subtle for a fresh and healthy look.

If you had to name some key trends for the upcoming Fall/Winter, which would they be?

Bold Blush: The heavy blush/cold flush airbrushed cheeks are definitely trending for winter 2022. Try the look by starting with a cream blush and dusting over with a powder blush for an airbrushed look. Metallic touches: A bit of metallic sparkle on the eyes has made a comeback just In time for the festive season. Bold Lips: It’s the season for a berry or brick red lip that will never go out of style.
