An Ode to Triomphe: CELINE’s Fall/Winter 2024 Recalls Its Heritage

By  |

On an afternoon in 1971, when Céline Vipiana’s car broke down and left her stranded on Place de l’Étoile, she met her musings. Her discovery of the chain link that encircled the Arc de Triomphe inspired what became the monogram of CELINE.  Hedi Slimane’s arrival in 2018 brought the monogram’s modernist redesign and its dubbing as “Triomphe”.

A film directed by Slimane debuted the CELINE Fall/Winter 2024 collection ‘La Collection de L’arc de Triomphe’, which recaptures CELINE’s prime: the 1960s and its shift to luxury ready-to-wear. The collection, infused with the essence of the house, remained anchored in two-piece sets of thigh-skimming hemlines and cropped jackets, shift dresses, faux fur outerwear and patent calfskin boots.

The hand-embroidery and authentic reweaved materials of the garments accented the chic accessories. Our eyes were on the Triomphe-embellished Garance bag and boxy Triomphe 13 shades. Remarkably, the 60s-inspired felt hats substitute the classic CELINE baseball cap.

Dedicated to his deceased friend and mentor, Richard Avedon, the show holds sentimental significance for Slimane. Having filmed in iconic locations across Paris, like the glass mirror room at the La Salle Pleyel with an original soundtrack by Mélanie Chédeville, the runway presentation paid homage to tradition and innovation.

Moreover, the show marks a significant milestone for the house with the announcement of CELINE BEAUTÉ, its inaugural cosmetics line, expanding from its haute parfumerie collection. Models showcased the “La Peau Nue” Rose Naturel Lipstick, a preview of the upcoming ‘Le Rouge CELINE’ collection set to launch in 2025. The debut offering from CELINE BEAUTÉ, Rouge Triomphe satin lipstick, is slated for release later this year.
